  • Domesticated (with update)

The last couple of days I have had the urge to do a few different domesticated type things.  Its weird how that goes in cycles...

A while ago, I had received a trivet that had been my grandmother's.  I kept it because I thought it was really cool, not because it has any sentimental value or anything.  Im pretty sure she made it. Its bottle caps and scraps of fabric.

For a while, I have been wanting to make my own.  A couple of years ago, I collected a bunch of bottle caps so that I could.  Its a good thing I collected the bottle caps then, because we havent been drinking anything lately that has bottle caps!  Yesterday, I finally got around to making one.  I didnt have any scraps of fabric, so I went to the local fabric store.  I was able to get 4 different pieces for $3.75.  They are 'remnants' so they were half thier normal price.  I still have enough to make probably half a dozen trivets at least!  Which is awesome.  I love cheap projects.

Dont be fooled though.  Even though it is simple - cover the bottle caps with fabric and then sew together - it still took me hours.  I started it about 2:30 or so and didnt finish until about 7!    I did stop a couple of times - to put laundry away and make dinner - but never for a long time.  So over all, it probably took at least 3 or 3 1/2 hours to make.  Oh well, I still think it turned out pretty cool.  What do you think?  My next one will use the plain blue and white fabrics, but the third fabric will be flowers.  Im pretty excited for it too.  And the added bonus?  Usefulness out of things that are otherwise considered junk!

Then today I decided to make Fastnachts for Fat Tuesday.  Im not really a celebrator of Fat Tuesday, but I do love Fastnachts.  I dont make they every year because they are a pain in the butt - potato dough is so freaking sticky!  In fact, I hadnt made any since high school!  I was really wanting some, so I made them tonight.  I refuse to make them tomorrow - it looked like my kitchen exploded by the time I was finished.  Tomorrow I will be cleaning everything up and getting all the other loose ends together before vacation, I dont need to do something extra!  So I made them tonight.  Super yummy.  And I will get to enjoy them tomorrow too!

Edit:  Since so many people didnt know what Fastnachts were, I decided I would give a bit more information.  I assumed everyone knew what they were because they were common where I grew up.  Thats what I get for assuming!  I would call them a potato donut.  They are more dense than an everyday donut though.  Although the recipe I used doesnt have a lot of fat in it (just 2T of butter for about 5 or 6 dozen donuts), they are traditionally made to use up fat before Lent.  It is a Pennsylvania Dutch thing.  They are best when eaten warm, but they are good the next day too.
